Windass and Mighten send Wednesday through to second round

Wednesday moved into the second round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Morecambe at Hillsborough this evening.

Goals in each half from Josh Windass and Alex Mighten mean the Owls will now be in the round two draw to be televised live on BBC 2 at 7pm on Monday.

Michael Smith twice went close with headers and Jack Hunt had an effort deflected onto a post in the early stages against Morecambe before Windass opened the scoring on 29 minutes, firing home in style from 20 yards.

Morecambe went close to an equaliser almost immediately when David Stockdale saved from Jensen Weir but Wednesday were largely in control.

Alex Mighten saw a shot blocked by keeper Connor Ripley just before half time and the loanee then fired over early in the second period after a good run.

At the other end, Dominic Iorfa cleared off the line following a Stockdale error before Wednesday hit back with a run and shot from Mallik Wilks and a Windass header tipped over by Ripley.

Stockdale pulled off a good save on the hour when he pushed away a Weir long-ranger before Reece James shot over when well placed.

However, there was more breathing space for Wednesday 25 minutes from time when Mighten, who was turning in his best display for us so far, finally found the net when he seized on a poor back pass and slotted past Ripley to make it 2-0.

We continued to create chances late on, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru shooting just wide and fellow sub Callum Paterson seeing his effort turned away for a corner by Ripley after being put through by Smith’s flick, and the Owls eased into the next round.

Stockdale, Hunt (Ihiekwe 71), Iorfa, McGuinness, James (Johnson 71), Bakinson, Vaulks, Mighten, Windass (Dele-Bashiru 71), Wilks (Paterson 81), Smith. Unused subs: Charles, Brown, Byers, Bannan, Gregory. Att: 8,558.
