Owls off to Everton if we win replay

Wednesday will be off to Premier League Everton in the FA Cup if we can beat Blackpool in our fourth round replay.

The tie would see Gary Megson pitched against a team he used to play for and for older fans would bring back memories of the 1966 FA Cup Final when we lost 3-2 after leading 2-0.

Fifth round ties will be played over the weekend of February 18-19.

Wednesday looking to strengthen before Tuesday’s deadline

Wednesday will be looking to bring in one or two players before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Gary Megson confirmed after the draw at Blackpool that he hopes to strengthen the side in the next couple of days, saying: “We’re trying to bring in one or two new players but other clubs are also interested in them so it’s not that easy.

“However, the emergency loan window opens again after seven days and we will be looking to strengthen again then – whether we have brought anyone in before then or not.”

Charlton extended their lead at the top of division one to nine points with a win at Exeter while second-placed Huddersfield could only manage a point at Tranmere. That leaves them on 54 points, one ahead of us and Sheff U, but we both have one game in hand – that coming for the Owls at MK Dons on Tuesday evening.

* Wednesday will be selling 800 extra tickets for the derby game, these going on sale at S6 to personal callers only from 9am on Monday and applicants need to be on the club’s database.

‘Ref couldn’t wait to give the penalty’ says Megson

Gary Megson felt the referee couldn’t wait to give Blackpool the injury-time penalty that robbed us of a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

Referring to the penalty award, given for Chris Sedgwick’s challenge on Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Megson pointed to a similar challenge on Jermaine Johnson seconds earlier which was allowed to go unpunished.

The Owls boss said: “I wasn’t in the best position to see but it looked a soft penalty . . . there were about 18 players in the box, the ball was just hoofed into the area and there was bound to be a coming together of players and I felt the ref couldn’t wait to give a penalty.”

Megson felt the Owls performance was “okay” but added : “It was really disappointing not to have held on and to have conceded another late goal.”

He also praised Stephen Bywater for two top drawer saves and said Blackpool keeper Matt Gilks performed likewise with two first-half stops from Ryan Lowe.

Another late blow for Wednesday as Phillips strikes from spot

Kevin Phillips, so often the scourge of Wednesday over the years, robbed us of an FA Cup upset at Blackpool on Saturday.

Clinton Morrison’s excellent strike soon after the break put us ahead but, just as we looked to have earnt a place in the fifth round we once again conceded an injury-time goal, Chris Sedgwick harshly adjudged to have fouled Gary Taylor-Fletcher in the box and Phillips firing the spot kick home to take the game to a replay.

We’re off to Blackpool … but with more than half an eye on MK

Lewis Buxton should be fit – if selected – for the Owls squad for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Blackpool.

Buxton missed Tuesday’s win at Scunthorpe wth a tight hamstring but Gary Megson said he should be clear for the trip to play Ian Holloway’s Championship oufit. However, with a promotion clash at MK Dons three days later, Megson may be tempted to leave Buxton out of the cup tie.

Miguel Llera and Mike Jones will both miss out as they are cup-tied while Daniel Jones is awaiting a scan on a calf problem after being stretchered off at Glandford Park.

Up front, Megson could also consider fielding Clinton Morrison and Ryan Lowe in place of Gary Madine and Chris O’Grady – again with an eye on the MK trip.

Megson eyes up possible loan deal for midfielder Bodde

Gary Megson has confirmed he is interested in Swansea midfielder Ferrie Bodde.

He said: “I tried to sign Ferrie quite a few years ago when I was at Bolton. At that time he had really bad luck with cruciate problems and he’s been out for a long time.

“He’s a really good player but I don’t know if anything will come off. It’s early days yet but it’s certainly something I would be interested in.”

Megson indicated that he could be speaking to Swans boss Brendan Rogers about a possible move for Bodde. If it was to move forward then it would probably be a loan arrangement – the window for full transfers and half-season loans closes next Tuesday but the market for emergency loans opens again the following week.

Bodde, 29, is a former Dutch under-23 international and joined Swansea from Den Haag in 2007. However, injuries have restricted his appearances to just 54 ganes during that time and he has not made a first team appearance for two seasons.

Wednesday hoping for more tickets after derby clash sellout

Wednesday are hoping they will get the all-clear to free up more seats for next month’s derby clash with Sheff U at Hillsborough.

All tickets for the home sections of the ground have been sold but club officials are now in talks with the local Safety Advisory Group to see if additional seating can be allocated to Owls fans.

Parts of both the North and South stands towards the away end of the ground have been made no-go areas in recent years, particularly for bigger games, and it is likely to be these sections that will be under discussion.

The sellout signs went up for Wednesdayites after we sold 12,500 tickets inside three days of them going on general sale. The game, which is not being televised live, is a 1pm kick off on Sunday February 26.

O’Grady and JJ strike as Owls move back to joint second

Two goals from Chris O’Grady and another Jermaine Johnson solo effort inside the first 48 minutes saw Wednesday to a 3-1 win at Scunthorpe on Tuesday evening.

And victory takes us back to joint second place in the promotion chase.

O’Grady scored after 47 seconds and 18 minutes and JJ struck his second goal in two games soon after half time.

The home side pulled a goal back through Robertson on 55 minutes and we rode our luck on one or two occasions as Scunny rallied.

At the other end, Johnson caused havoc with another solo effort but let himself down with the finish.

Wednesday lost the recalled Daniel Jones early on with a leg injury.
