Wednesday well beaten in the heat of the Spanish sun

New boss Xisco Munoz was given plenty to think about after his Wednesday side were thumped 4-0 in this morning’s friendly against CD Eldense in Murcia.

The hosts, promoted to the second tier of Spanish football last season, will have been far more used to playing in the 30 degrees-plus temperatures – even with kick off time at 9am – and they looked much sharper than an Owls squad who hardly mustered a decent move of note throughout the entire 90 sweltering minutes.

Eldense got off to the perfect start when they took the lead on just five minutes thanks to an excellent swerving 25-yarder from Arnau Ortiz which flew past Cameron Dawson.

With Wednesday failing to cope with the home side’s neat passing movements, it was no surprise that they doubled the lead 10 minutes before the break when we failed to pick up a run in the box and Juanto Ortuno slotted across Dawson into the far corner of the net.

Eldense missed a good chance to make it three just before the break but they eventually got a third 12 minutes from time when Wednesday again allowed a free run into the box and Joel Jorquera converted with ease.

Worse followed soon afterwards when we failed to cut out a high through ball and Ivan Chapela strode through to slot home a fourth goal past sub keeper Pierce Charles and so complete a miserable morning in the Spanish sun for Wednesday.

Dawson (Charles 80), Iorfa, Ihiekwe (Adetoro 84), Adetoro (Famewo 46), James (Johnson 81), Fusire (Johnson 84) Vaulks (Glover 61), Bakinson (Cook 81), Bannan (Shipston 61), Windass (Paterson 81), Gregory (Smith 61).
