Wednesday feel the heat in goalless draw

Wednesday had to settle for a goalless draw against Real Murcia in the sweltering Spanish heat this evening.

The friendly kicked off in a temperature of 35-plus degrees and it was still 32 degrees at the final whistle, so it was no surprise that the match tempo was very much ‘fits and starts’ and several much-needed substitutions and drinks breaks in both halves meant it was difficult for the sides to find any consistent rhythm in their play.

Tyreeq Bakinson saw a shot from the edge of the box deflected for a corner just before the half-hour mark but the hosts responded with two quick chances of their own, Pierce Charles saving well and then Jay Glover clearing off the line.

With time running out before the break, Dominic Iorfa might have done better when he failed to hit the target with a header from a Josh Windass corner.

Wednesday made eight substitutions at half time with only Iorfa, Bakinson and Luke Cook staying on at the start of the second half and Lee Gregory saw an early opening saved by keeper Gallego.

Murcia missed a good chance at the other end before Gallego was in action again on the hour, tipping over from Bakinson.

Adam Alimi-Adetoro failed to convert a dangerous free kick from Will Vaulks, sending his header over the bar in the closing minutes, and it was the same story at the other end with Murcia seeing their last opportunity of the night going over the bar from inside the box.

Charles (Dawson 46), Glover (Flannery 46) Iorfa (Fusire 63), Famewo (Ihiekwe 46), James (Adetoro 46), Fusire (Shipston 46), Bakinson (Glover 63), Windass (Byers 46), Bannan (Vaulks 46), Johnson (Cook 30), Smith (Gregory 46).
