Wednesday beaten in friendly

Wednesday slipped to a single goal defeat in the first of their two friendlies in Germany on Friday evening.

Dennis Hoins hit the winner for home side, VfB Lubeck, just before half time in a match to celebrate the club’s centenary.

Atdhe Nuhiu and Sam Winnall went close to scoring before Hoins fired past Cameron Dawson, the Owls keeper having already made two outstanding stops to keep the scores level.

Winnall headed narrowly wide after the break and Fernando Forestieri brought a save out of home keeper Lukas Raeder but we failed to find an equaliser.

Dawson, replaced by Joe Wildsmith at half time, came back on for the latter 10 minutes from time after Wildsmith took a heavy knock in a challenge with the home side’s Patrick Hobsch.

Dawson (Wildsmith 46; Dawson 80), Baker, van Aken, Iorfa, Fox, Penney, Pelupessy, Lee (McEachran 46), Joao (Rhodes 61), Nuhiu (Forestieri 73), Winnall.
