Under-21s battle back to grab late equaliser in derby clash

Wednesday’s under-21s twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Sheff U in their Professional Development League derby clash at Hillsborough this evening.

Substitute Luke Cook’s excellent turn and shot inside the box in added time sealed a point for second-placed Wednesday against their table-topping visitors in an entertaining match and in front of new first team boss Danny Rohl.

Sheff U took the lead on eight minutes through Owen Hampson while the closest the Owls youngsters came to equalising in the first half came via a Bailey Cadamarteri shot that went just wide and then a Ciaran Brennan header saved by keeper Luke Faxon just before the break.

However, it took just two minutes of the restart for us to level, Sheff U’s Dovydas Sasnauskas slicingĀ  the ball against his own bar and Cadamarteri pouncing to smash the rebound high into the Kop net from close range for his 10th goal of the season.

Wednesday then pressed forward in search of a second goal but it was the visitors who regained the lead in a counter-attack on the hour, Jili Buyabu’s low angled drive beating Pierce Charles in the home goal.

Buoyed by that, the league leaders began to dominate but Wednesday hung on in there and grabbed that second equaliser on 91 minutes when Cook seized on a loose ball in the box before swivelling to fire past Faxon and earn the S6 youngsters a share of the points.
