Wednesday moved into fourth place in division one when Lee Gregory’s first goal for the club saw us to a 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town at Hillsborough this evening.
The victory takes us onto seven points after three games, with no goals conceded, leaving us two adrift of joint leaders Portsmouth and Burton and behind third-placed Wycombe on goals scored.
We began the game against Fleetwood in excellent style, Gregory heading over from Jack Hunt’s cross when he might have done better after just two minutes.
Lewis Wing tested keeper Alex Cairns from the edge of the box and we took the lead on 15 minutes, Gregory and Dennis Adeniran combined in midfield and when Cairns parried Adeniran’s shot, Gregory was on hand to turn home the loose ball in his full debut for the Owls.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell was called into action at the other end, saving a 20-yarder from Harrison Biggins but Wednesday – and Gregory – almost made it two midway through the half when his header came back off the base of the post.
However, we found it difficult to build on the encouraging first half hour and Fleetwood began to find their feet as the half wore on.
Marvin Johnson missed a good chance to increase our lead early in the second half after being set up by Gregory, steering the ball wide from close-in while under pressure from a defender. Then Gregory broke clear just after the hour, latching onto a classic Barry Bannan through ball but shooting wide.
That was as close as we got to a second goal and it was Fleetwood who posed the greater threat in the closing minutes as we held on to the three points in a typically nervy ending to the game for Wednesday.
