Much-changed Owls slide to another Trophy defeat

A much-changed Wednesday side slipped to a second defeat in two Papa Johns Trophy matches played, losing 3-2 to Burton Albion at Hillsborough this evening.

Dominic Iorfa was the only survivor tonight from the starting eleven against Ipswich on Saturday and we found ourselves two goals down inside the first 18 minutes.

Ex-Owl loanee Sam Winnall put Burton ahead on eight minutes and then Jonny Smith curled home a second.

It could have been worse with Ben Heneghan, back from injury, heading off the line from another former Wednesday loanee, Deji Oshilaja, while Davis Keillor-Dunn cracked a 25-yarder against a post.

Wednesday did threaten to get back in the game, Mallik Wilks bringing a save out of keeper Ben Garratt, although he would have been better squaring to Alex Mighten in the middle of the goal.

However, Wilks went one better after 32 minutes, firing his first goal for the club into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards after good play by Lee Gregory.

Two minutes later we were back on level terms, Mighten saw his shot blocked but it rebounded to Callum Paterson and he drilled home from 12 yards.

Hopes of Wednesday continuing the comeback after half time were soon dealt a blow, Iorfa giving away a 51st minute penalty after a clumsy challenge on Oshilaja, and Keillor-Dunn smashed home from the spot.

Tyreeq Bakinson curled an effort wide from 25 yards and missed a chance in the box after being set up by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru as we sought another equaliser. Then a good run by Wilks saw the ball end up with Bakinson again but he sent the ball over the bar from inside a crowded penalty area.

The introduction of Barry Bannan from the bench brought added energy and creativity to our play in the closing stages but Garratt dealt comfortably with any danger to leave our hopes of progressing in the Trophy looking extremely doubtful.
