Late goal ends hopes of FA Youth Cup quarter final

Hopes of Wednesday’s under-18s reaching the last eight of the FA Youth Cup ended three minutes from time at Cambridge United this evening.

With the teams locked at 1-1 for the majority of the game it was the home side who grabbed the winner through Brandon Njoku to earn a quarter final tie against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

We had fallen behind after just nine minutes when Glenn McConnell put Cambridge ahead from the edge of the box.

However, we were back on level terms 10 minutes later when Joey Phuthi went past two defenders before shooting home from close range.

Wednesday then struggled to create many more chances while Cambridge had openings at the other end.

Goalscorer McConnell hit the crossbar just after the hour, Jack Hall pulled off a good save from a Kai Yearn header and the decider finally came on 87 minutes with Njoku firing home from inside the penalty area to end the Wednesday youngsters excellent run in the competition.
