Five second-half goals saw Wednesday ease through to the Carabao Cup third round after a worrying first 45 minutes at Grimsby this evening.
As he did in the last round, Danny Rohl named an entirely different starting eleven to the one that played in the previous league game, and we looked like we could be on the wrong end of a cup upset at the break, failing to get a shot on target despite dominating possession and falling behind to a headed goal from Cameron McJannet on 17 minutes.
It could have been worse with Kieran Green sending another header against the crossbar six minutes before the break as Wednesday failed to get to grips with their division two opponents.
Not surprisingly, Danny Rohl looked anything but pleased on the touchline. He introduced Pol Valentin and Jamal Lowe at the start of the second half and they both played a big part as Wednesday found themselves 2-1 ahead within nine minutes of the restart.
On 53 minutes, Valentin broke down the right before pulling the ball back for Ike Ugbo to sweep home and, within a minute it was Ugbo the provider. His through ball found Lowe and he put us ahead via the body of keeper Jake Eastwood.
Barry Bannan and Josh Windass joined the action just after the hour and Bannan soon began to have a major influence, his pass on 72 minutes picking out Marvin Johnson for the defender to set up Callum Paterson to finish in excellent fashion from 12 yards.
Eight minutes later it was 4-1, a pinpoint cross from Olaf Kobacki finding the unmarked Paterson and he headed home in front of the sellout away end.
The icing on the Carabao Cup cake came in added time with a fifth for Wednesday. It began with a cracking low 35-yard pass from keeper Pierce Charles and when Bannan picked out Valentin inside the box he drilled the ball across goal and into the far corner of the net to complete an emphatic recovery that looked a long way off at half time.
The third round draw will take place after the Forest-Newcastle round two tie on Wednesday evening and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
