Young trio miss out on FA Cup tie

Youngsters Sean Clare, Jordan Thorniley and Jack Stobbs are all cup-tied and miss out on Saturday lunchtime’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Carlos Carvalhal’s Swansea City.

The trio have played for other clubs in previous rounds while on loan this season and this further restricts Jos Luhukay as he selects from an already injury-ravaged squad.

The Wednesday boss has confirmed that Cameron Dawson will take over from Joe Wildsmith in goal, as he has done in previous rounds of the cup, and hinted that Ross Wallace will return to the starting line-up after being rested against Derby.

Glenn Loovens, who came back after illness in midweek, was taken off in the closing minutes as he was suffering some leg pain but could well play from the start against Swansea.

Luhukay stressed at Friday’s press conference that he will only select players who can give 100 per cent. He said that Tom Lees is likely to have a 90-minute runout for the academy side next week, following his previous 60-minute stint for the youngsters, and is not yet ready for a return to first team action.

Of the longer-term injured players, Barry Bannan looks closest to getting back in contention with Luhukay hoping he can start full training again in about a fortnight’s time.
