Wednesday kept our three-point lead at the top of division one after a deserved 1-0 victory over Peterborough at Hillsborough this afternoon.
With promotion rivals Plymouth and Ipswich both also winning, the gap ahead of the Pilgrims stays at three points, with the Tractor Boys trailing us by a further five points. We also have a game in hand on both of them and a superior goal difference.
The Owls found it tough going in the first half and our major threat on the Peterborough goal came on 26 minutes with an effort straight from the training ground.
Barry Bannan’s low right-wing corner picked out Josh Windass just inside the box and his fierce first-time shot cannoned back off the crossbar with keeper Will Norris beaten.
Peterborough caused problems at times with their tricky approach play but lacked penetration in the final third.
Wednesday began the second half in more determined fashion and twice went close to taking the lead in the opening minutes.
Aden Flint saw his close-range header from a Barry Bannan cross come back off keeper Norris and then Josh Windass failed to connect properly from 12 yards and his shot was saved.
However, our pressure finally paid off on the hour mark when Bannan sent a trademark pass inside the full back for the overlapping Jaden Brown and his low effort was deflected in at the near post by Posh defender Nathan Thompson.
Five minutes later Brown was the hero at the other end, his last-ditch tackle foiling Kwame Poku as the striker broke clear and was shaping to shoot just inside the box, but that was a rare sign of a second-half chance for the visitors, who failed to get a shot on target all afternoon.
Sub Lee Gregory brought a save out of Norris with a sharp volley from Jack Hunt’s cross 10 minutes from time and, while it wasn’t a five-star display from Wednesday, it was another three valuable points in our push for promotion, at the same time stretching the unbeaten league run to 21 games and seeing us make it 10 wins in our last 11 division one outings.
