Reports are indicating that Wednesday will shortly be served with a winding-up petition over money owed to HMRC.
After an investigation carried out by BBC Radio Sheffield and the Sheffield Star, it is understood the Owls owe £1m.
A winding-up petition sees a creditor filing a formal court application to force an insolvent company into compulsory liquidation. With the HMRC seemingly owed £1m it appears that they are ready to take that step.
The possibility of a winding-up petition would also increase pressure on owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club after a torrid period, particularly in recent times, under the Thai businessman.
It follows months of late payment of wages to players and non-playing staff, the departure of several key players in the summer and manager Danny Rohl also leaving the club.
Fan protests have followed, including one by the London Owls Supporters’ Club outside the Thai Embassy in London in September, and calls from the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust to boycott some home matches.
We are also currently under five separate EFL embargoes and a points deduction from the league looks certain at some stage, the club’s depleted squad not surprisingly already sitting one place off the foot of the Championship table with six points from the first nine games of the season.
