Wednesday ‘one point from survival’ after three-goal success

Wednesday took a massive step towards Championship survival with a 3-0 win over play-off chasing West Brom in front of a Hillsborough full-house this afternoon.

The win lifts us up into 2oth place on 50 points and needing only a draw from our final game of the season at Sunderland next Saturday to ensure we retain our place in the second tier.

After today’s results, Huddersfield look like joining Rotherham in being relegated while we have moved to three points above the drop zone, with Birmingham below us on 47 points and Plymouth on 48.

We took the lead against West Brom on 22 minutes, Anthony Musaba turning the ball past Alex Palmer from close range after the keeper had denied Josh Windass.

The goal sparked the visitors into more attacking life before the break but it was Wednesday who began the second half in the ascendancy and we doubled our lead on 50 minutes, Ike Ugbo seizing on a loose ball in the box and firing into the roof of the net.

We then threatened to increase the lead, Josh Windass just failing to connect with a low Musaba cross and Ugbo forcing a fine save from Palmer at his near post.

Windass hit the outside of a post with a header as Wednesday continued to press for a third goal and the striker finally got on the scoresheet on 70 minutes, turning the ball home at the far post after Palmer had pushed out a Barry Bannan long-ranger.

With the game seemingly won by Wednesday, West Brom launched a late rally but James Beadle produced a string of saves to preserve a clean sheet and another precious three points.

Beadle, Palmer, Iorfa, Bernard (Famewo 86), Johnson, Vaulks, Bannan (B. Diaby 76), Valentin, Musaba (Smith 76), Windass (Gassama 76), Ugbo (Paterson 76). Unused subs: Dawson, Pedersen, M. Diaby, Cadamarteri. Attendance: 33,295.
