Di’Shon Bernard’s first-half header was enough to earn Wednesday a place in next week’s Carabao Cup fourth round draw after a 1-0 win at Blackpool this evening.
Danny Rohl made 11 changes from the side that started against QPR on Saturday and it was a largely low-key affair with division one Blackpool managing just one effort on target in the 90 minutes.
The all-important goal came on 34 minutes with a ‘route one’ effort, Pol Valentin’s long pass forward was nodded down in the box by Michael Smith and Bernard swept the ball home from six yards.
That came six minutes after Bernard had seen a header ruled out for offside as he latched on to a cracking cross from Svante Ingelsson.
Callum Paterson threatened with two headers at the start of the second half with the home side, who included ex-Owl Jordan Rhodes, posing few problems.
Wednesday brought on Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer for the final 15 minutes and we looked the more likely side to score in the closing stages as we moved safely into the round four draw, which will be made on Sky Sports after the Liverpool-West Ham tie on September 25.
