Sam’s starring role as Glenn grabs winner

Sam Hutchinson produced another outstanding performance to earn the man-of-the-match award as he inspired Wednesday to a tremendous 1-0 win at Newcastle.

He was the standout player on a standout night for the Owls which, on chances created, could have led to a more emphatic victory over the league leaders.

The first-half saw Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri foiled by home keeper Karl Darlow, while at the other end Keiren Westwood tipped a Dwight Gayle effort onto the joint of post and crossbar.

Darlow saved again from Fletcher soon after the break when the striker looked certain to score from eight yards out before Glenn Loovens struck on 52 minutes – nodding home his first goal for the club from close range after Darlow had produced another flying save from a Tom Lees header.

Westwood excelled at the other end when Newcastle did threaten, particularly after we had taken the lead, and Wednesday held firm to secure an excellent victory which cements our position in sixth place, four points clear of Fulham in seventh.
