Wednesday were outplayed and lucky to escape with just a two-goal defeat in tonight’s Yorkshire derby with Leeds at Hillsborough.
We hardly troubled the visitors in terms of attacking threats, struggled to cope with Leeds’ high press as we tried to build from the back while their sharp passing and movement often proved too much for us.
Danny Rohl said afterwards: “We played against a strong side tonight, they showed in 90 minutes all their quality.
“To take something out of a game you have to do all the basics right, we didn’t and we deserved to lose.
“The second goal was, in my opinion, too easy and made it difficult for us to get anything out of the match.
“We can learn from every game and I have said this to my players. This league is about hard work, we have to learn, we will learn.
“We have an important game in the cup and then Millwall away. You have to be ready and go again and again with the right mindset.”
Leeds took the upper hand from early in the game and might have been ahead before taking the lead on 23 minutes, breaking from deep in their own half in a move that finished with Brenden Aaronson turning the ball past James Beadle from 12 yards.
Our only real first-half threat on goal came when Svante Ingelsson saw his shot from the edge of the box blocked by Pascal Struijk.
Hopes of a second-half fightback were all but ended three minutes after the restart, Daniel James bursting clear from just inside our half and racing on to clip the ball past an exposed Beadle.
Di’Shon Bernard had our closest effort of the game midway through the second half, his header from Ingelsson’s long throw going just wide of the post.
However, that was as near as we got while Leeds might have added to the scoreline before the end with Mateo Joseph firing over the bar and Beadle then saving from James.
