Rohl: We need to improve in both boxes

Danny Rohl said Wednesday have to improve in both boxes after we suffered a 2-0 defeat to promotion-chasing Burnley at Hillsborough this afternoon.

Goals either side of half time proved the difference, with Rohl commenting: “All in all, the performance was okay but not the result. But I can take the positives from this performance against a well-organised team who showed their clinical side.

“We had chances today and as a manager it is a concern if that is not the situation.

“But we have to improve in both boxes and this is our intention week-by-week. Today is a setback and now we must show how we can respond against Swansea on Tuesday.”

Overall, Burnley were the better side and the three points took them to the top of the Championship table while the defeat drops us back to 18th.

After a promising opening, we went in at half time one-down and looking back on a crucial eight-minute spell.

First, Ike Ugbo headed over from six yards out just after the half-hour mark when he should have at least hit the target and worse followed when the visitors were gifted an opening goal soon afterwards, Yan Valery making a hash of trying to clear a hopeful through ball with the grateful Jaidon Anthony taking full advantage by slotting home past James Beadle.

Another chance came and went our way immediately after half time, Pol Valentin pulling the ball back from the byline after a good run but the cross failed to find a Wednesday attacker.

And, just as happened in the first half, we were soon punished again as Burnley reaped the reward of weak defending to double their lead on 49 minutes.

Zian Flemming raced clear down the middle and, although Beadle managed to block his effort, it rebounded to Josh Brownhill and he fired home, via Akin Famewo on the line.

Burnley were close to a third when Beadle went full length to keep out Anthony’s free kick, Jeremy Sarmiento heading his follow-up against the post, before Michael Smith sent a 12-yard volley high over the Kop bar in added time.

Beadle, Valentin (Ingelsson 60), Valery, Bernard, Johnson, Famewo, S Charles (Palmer 72), Kobacki (Musaba 60), Bannan (J Lowe 72), Gassama, Ugbo (Smith 72). Unused subs: P Charles, M Lowe, Iorfa, McNiell. Attendance 28,105.
