Liam Palmer has been appointed Wednesday’s club captain following Barry Bannan’s move to Millwall.

Palmer, who has made a remarkable 491 appearances for the Owls, will start his new role by leading the team out for tomorrow lunchtime’s clash with play-off chasing Wrexham at Hillsborough.

Henrik Pedersen said today: “Liam will be the captain for the rest of the season.

“With the situation we have at the club and all we have been through, it is very natural for Liam to be the captain.

“He is a natural leader, he was part of the senior group with Barry, and he has so much experience at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He has my full respect as a player and a person and the same is said for the whole of the group.”

Loan signing Jerry Yates from Luton is eligible to play and Olaf Kobacki has returned to full training.

Meanwhile, Nathan Redmond’s short-term contract has expired while Max Lowe has suffered a blow in his recovery from injury and could be out for up to another eight weeks.

Wrexham are expected to have ex-Owl Josh Windass in their squad as Wednesday continue the search for that long-awaited first Championship win of the season at Hillsborough.

The game kicks off at 12.30pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports+.
