Two quickfire late goals ended Wednesday’s hopes of taking at least a point from promotion-chasing Ipswich at Hillsborough this afternoon.
We fought hard to match the Tractor Boys who dominated overall possession but, just when we looked as though we might earn a goalless draw, the visitors struck with goals in the 78th and 82nd minutes to take the points back to Portman Road.
Ipswich took charge in the early stages, Gabriel Otegbayo blocking an effort from ex-Owl George Hirst and Anis Mehmeti testing Pierce Charles with a low shot.
It was 36 minutes before we had a shot on target, Sean Fusire’s effort from the edge of box saved by keeper Christian Walton.
Ipswich hit back soon afterwards when Charles pushed out a long-ranger from Dan Neil and Walle Egeli shot woefully wide from the rebound. Then Svante Ingelsson came to the rescue just before half time when he nodded Darnell Furlong’s header off the line from a corner.
Wednesday showed occasional moments of promise after the break and our best opportunity of the game came on 70 minutes when Jamal Lowe sent Jerry Yates through but he slightly delayed his angled shot and defender Jacob Greaves blocked the effort.
Five minutes later came the best chance so far for Ipswich when Ivan Azon broke clear but shot narrowly wide from 12 yards.
However, the same player redeemed himself within two minutes when he turned home a Ben Johnson cross from six yards to give his side the lead.
Worse followed within four minutes when Fusire tripped Jack Clarke just inside the box, the forward then picking himself up to fire home the resulting spot kick and seal victory.
