Owls have to wait on O’Neill decision over Wickham

Wednesday are waiting to hear from Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill to see if we can keep Connor Wickham at Hillsborough.

Wickham’s initial one-month loan at S6 runs out after tomorrow’s game at Leicester and, while Dave Jones has said he wants to extend the young striker’s stay at Wednesday, O’Neill is still undecided.

The Sunderland boss has watched Wickham twice during his spell with the Owls, the goalless draw at Bimrmingham and then at Watford on Tuesday night.

O’Neill said: “I’ll have a look at it and see where we go.

“The idea was for him to get some competitive games in, to help himself and help Sheffield Wednesday along the way. At least he’s played some games.

“I saw the quotes from Dave Jones saying he’d like to keep him, but he hasn’t approached me yet.”

Wickham has made four successive appearances for the Owls, after making his debut as a substitute, but has so far failed to find the net. O’Neill said of his display in the Watford game: “He did OK. There was a shot on the turn which he chested down and volleyed, which was a good effort, and then a header which he probably felt he should have scored with.”
