Wednesday threw away a two-goal lead and were left hanging on for a point in a 2-2 draw at Blackburn this evening.
In a classic ‘game of two halves’ we totally dominated the first 45 minutes, scored twice and might have had more but it was all change after the interval with the home side in charge and the Owls close to losing all three points in the closing stages.
We were indebted to Pierce Charles early on when the young keeper made a fine double save from Tyrhys Dolan and then Yuki Ohashi.
However, it was Wednesday who then took control for the remainder of the half and we were ahead on the quarter hour, Shea Charles sending a corner beyond the far post, Callum Paterson headed back across goal and Yan Valery nodded home from almost on the line.
We doubled our lead in excellent fashion on 38 minutes, Anthony Musaba’s low cross picking out Djeidi Gassama 12 yards from goal and he swivelled to fire into the corner of the net.
Wednesday might have been further ahead by half time but lacked that final killer pass and the second half saw a complete turnaround with Blackburn pulling a goal back on 51 minutes when Dolan headed home a Todd Cantwell corner at the near post.
Josh Windass tested home keeper Aynsley Pears and went close with a 20-yarder but they were rare threats from Wednesday after the interval and a Blackburn equaliser came five minutes from the end of normal time, Ohashi turning the ball home from six yards when we failed to clear Cantwell’s low cross.
The home side then went close on more than one occasion to grabbing an added time winner before Wednesday almost snatched it at the end with Michael Smith’s header narrowly missing the target.
It meant we were left looking at what might have been after the encouraging first-half performance but then grateful for a point after that worrying second-half showing.
The point leaves us still in 13th on 53 points and looking for a first win four games when we take on Oxford at Hillsborough on Saturday.
