Much-changed Wednesday exit FA Cup at Fleetwood

A much-changed Wednesday side bowed out of the FA Cup in a 1-0 fourth round replay defeat at Fleetwood this evening.

Darren Moore, with one eye on Saturday’s division one clash at third-placed Ipswich, made 10 changes from the side that went to the top of the table at the weekend, with only Liam Palmer keeping his place in the line-up.

Fleetwood had the better of the first half with Promise Omochere causing plenty of problems for Wednesday and going closest for the home side on 17 minutes when he turned in the box and saw his shot strike a post.

We had few clear chances in the first half but Lee Gregory almost broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when his header from Palmer’s cross hit the bar.

Moore made two changes at the back for the second half, Dominic Iorfa replacing Palmer and Akin Famewo subbed for debutant Adam Alimi-Adetoro, while Michael Smith came on for Gregory up front.

However, there was little change in terms of Fleetwood having the better of the game and it was little surprise when they took the lead on the hour when Carlos Mendes Gomes took advantage of slack marking to head home from a free kick.

Wednesday had late claims for a penalty turned down when Fisayo Dele-Bashiru went down under a challenge from Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu and, despite some late pressure from the Owls, we exited the cup, with thoughts quickly turning to the more important matter of that league trip to Ipswich on Saturday.

Stockdale, Fusire (Windass 70), Hunt, Palmer (Iorfa 46), Famewo (Adetoro 46), Brown, Bakinson, Dele-Bashiru, Adeniran (Byers 70), Wilks, Gregory (Smith 46). Subs. Dawson, Durrant, Shipston, Johnson.
