Wednesday somehow salvaged a point with two late goals in a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield this afternoon.

Henrik Pedersen called our first-half display “unacceptable”, it took us an hour to get an effort on goal and it wasn’t until the final 15 minutes, with Huddersfield seemingly happy to defend their two-goal lead, that we began to threaten their goal.

We took full advantage of that nervousness, pulling a goal back on 88 minutes when Ibane Bowat headed into his own net from Jaden Heskey’s cross into the box.

Then, eight minutes into added time we secured a highly unlikely point when we were awarded a penalty after Marcus Harness’ high boot challenge on Liam Cooper, resulting in the defender suffering a head injury.

Referee Edward Duckworth seemingly consulted his officials before confirming the spot kick and Jamal Lowe drove home the equaliser in front of the packed away end.

The result sees us dropping to seventh place in the League One table, four points behind leaders Plymouth but with a game in hand.

That dramatic two-goal finale was a far cry from the first hour with Wednesday failing to create an effort on goal and lacking the pace, aggression, commitment and passing movements to trouble the home side.

Only a tremendous 12th minute point-blank save by Joe Lumley prevented Joe Taylor from putting Huddersfield one-up from six yards out.

Our play was littered with misplaced passes and Lumley then saved a 15-yarder from Derensili Sanches Fernandes to keep the scoreline goalless at the break.

But that only lasted a minute into the second half, Wednesday giving the ball away at the back and Taylor pouncing to slot home from 12 yards.

Callum Slattery’s low 20-yarder was wide of the target at the other end and then Harry Gray cut inside to test home keeper Matt Young for the first time in the game on 64 minutes.

However, two minutes later Huddersfield doubled their lead when Fernandes shot home.

At this stage, it looked like a comfortable home win for the Terriers but, as they dropped deeper and deeper to defend their lead, Wednesday began to come more into the game.

When the ball dropped in the box to Lowe six yards out after a rare Wednesday move, his shot rebounded back off keeper Young but then came our breakthrough when Bowat headed into his own net to make it 2-1.

Mason Burstow failed to connect properly with a headed chance in added time but the 98th minute saw the penalty leveller from Lowe to complete the fightback.

Manager Pedersen, who continues to face criticism from some fans for the team’s recent disappointing league performances, added: “The first half was unacceptable, but the second was much better.

“I think Huddersfield were better than us in the first half. We gave them a present at the beginning of the second half but from there on, I think we were the stronger team.

“We were not good enough in the first half, but in the second half we saw much more of the Sheffield Wednesday team that we want to be in the future.”
