Late decision on Wednesday pair ahead of Birmingham trip

Danny Rohl will wait on Michael Smith and Di’Shon Bernard before naming his squad for Wednesday’s trip to Birmingham on Saturday.

Smith was sidelined through injury for the 4-0 home defeat to Millwall before the international break while Bernard joined back up with the Owls squad today after helping Jamaica to a two-legged Concacaf Nations League win over Canada, following matches in Jamaica and then in Toronto early on Wednesday morning (GMT).

We return to Championship action at Birmingham nine points adrift of safety and with just one win from our first 16 league games.

Manager Rohl said at today’s press conference: “With Michael we have to look from day to day. He is still in the process and we will see tomorrow if he is ready or not. We cannot say he’s not ready but we will have a look tomorrow in training.

“Di’Shon arrived back today. It was a little bit more about recovery but tomorrow he will be back in training and we will see how I will decide for Saturday’s match.

“He has confidence from going away with the national team and this is good.”

Callum Paterson is suspended for the game after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season in the Millwall defeat while young striker Bailey Cadamarteri will be pushing for a starting place after his impressive performance as a second-half sub against the Lions.

Rohl said: “It was a good first appearance for Bailey, he showed what he has done in training. He’s a young player, he is improving and he knows what he has to do.”

Birmingham go into the match with just one point from five games since Wayne Rooney was appointed manager, Rohl adding: “Birmingham will be a big challenge but we will prepare very well.

“I will focus on our team and our performance, it will be a battle but I have a good feeling and I am convinced about the work we have been doing in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully we will see this on Saturday.”
