Danny Rohl has confirmed he will be staying at Hillsborough.
He was linked with the manager’s job at Southampton, now seemingly filled this afternoon by Croat Ivan Joric, and Rohl told today’s press conference before that news and ahead of tomorrow’s home game with Stoke: “The important key point is that I am here and I will be taking the team tomorrow.
“My decision is clear, I will be staying here at Sheffield Wednesday. The club knows my ambitions, we agree we want to improve and take a higher position in the table.
“I love this club, I love the supporters and I love my players.
”I think we have achieved a lot in the last 14 months but our journey is not over, we want to improve further and to make the next step.”
When asked further about the upcoming January transfer window and whether the club’s ambitions match those of himself, Rohl said: ” I think I was very clear two weeks ago about what I expect from January and that also after we can talk about the outcome. This is a big point for me.”
He added: “I am very clear in my mind what I want to do here … and I think it is the best case if we can all work together as a group going in one direction.
“We have five games in the next 12 days, after that is the next opportunity so let’s see then what we are doing, if we really want to attack or if it’s just talking.”
With Wednesday sitting in ninth place in the Championship, the manager’s immediate challenge is to help us get three points at home to Stoke tomorrow lunchtime and so improve a disappointing league record at Hillsborough this season, with just three wins in 11 S6 outings.
Akin Famewo is the only player ruled out through injury and Rohl said: “My wish for Christmas is for us to get three points for our massive fans.”
