How ‘Wednesday trio’ fared in international action

James Beadle helped the England under-21s to a 0-0 friendly draw with Spain in Cadiz this evening while the Charles brothers, Pierce and Shea, were part of the Northern Ireland side who took another step towards Nations League promotion.

With the England youngsters failing to register a shot on target, Beadle was a busy keeper and, although the woodwork came to the rescue twice in the second half, he also made a string of saves with the pick of them coming after the break with an excellent stop from sub Stefan Bajcetic.

The Young Lions now travel to the Netherlands for another friendly on Monday night.

In Belfast, Shea Charles captained the Northern Ireland team to a 2-0 win over Belarus, meaning that they need just a point in Luxembourg on Monday evening to clinch promotion to the Nations League Group B.

The skipper provided the corner to the back post for Daniel Ballard to head the home side into a second-half lead and they doubled their advantage with a penalty from Dion Charles after Kirill Pechenin was adjudged to have handled a Shea Charles’ free kick.

Meanwhile, brother Pierce could look back on another clean sheet in the Northern Ireland goal.
