Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen was left with plenty to ponder after a strong line-up went down 4-0 at Oldham in the second game of our pre-season double header this afternoon.

Yes, it was only a friendly, but we worringly lacked the creativity, attacking threat and energy against League Two opposition.

Wednesday began the game in lively fashion, Louie Barry dragging an effort wide and then the unmarked Liam Palmer missed a great chance to put us ahead on 11 minutes when he headed over from inside the six-yard box.

We paid for that two minutes later as Joe Lumley failed to cut out a cross to the far post and when the ball came back in Calum Kavanagh scored with a glancing header.

Lumley produced a decent save to keep out a snapshot from Kane Drummond but was beaten again just on half time, Wednesday only half clearing from a good move by Oldham and when the ball found Keenan Appiah-Forson on the edge of the box, he curled home.

At the other end, Wednesday showed little threat while Billy Mitchell was subbed at half time for triallist Tyler Onyango.

We missed two chances to reduce the arrears in the opening period of the second half but Sil Swinkels failed to connect properly from inside the box and Jordi Liongola fired off target after being picked out by Barry Bannan.

However, Oldham made it 3-0 with 20 minutes left, a triallist firing home from the edge of the box, despite being surrounded by a cluster of Wednesday defenders.

Our best move of the match came on 77 minutes, culminating in a pull back across goal by Max Lowe but Liongola failed to connect properly and the effort was blocked.

And, just to complete a sorry afternoon for the Owls, Oldham made it 4-0 almost on the final whistle, Noah Chilvers hitting a free kick over the wall from the edge of the box.
