Wednesday’s Austrian double header against Stoke City ended in two defeats in Vienna this afternoon.

The teams named two different line-ups as they played matches of 70 minutes apiece – split into two halves of 35 minutes – and we finished on the receiving end of 2-0 and 4-0 reverses against Championship opposition.

Henrik Pedersen fielded a stronger side in the first game but we went one-down after just ten minutes when Sam Gallagher netted inside the penalty area after an initial Stoke effort came back off the post.

Sean Fusire sent a dangerous ball across goal in reply but Wednesday hardly troubled Stoke in the first half and we fell further behind on 46 minutes when Gabriel Otegbayo’s intended pass back to Joe Lumley fell well short and Lamine Cisse turned the ball home.

Jamal Lowe missed a great chance to reduce the deficit soon afterwards when he was gifted the opening thanks to poor Stoke defending but the striker’s finish was off target.

And another opportunity was wasted when Callum Slattery sidefooted wide from eight yards after being set up by Louie Barry, leaving Wednesday on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

Lumley, Palmer, Otegbayo, Swinkels, M Lowe, Fusire, Slattery, Thornton, Bannan, J Lowe, Barry.

The less experienced line-up then took to the field but found themselves trailing on nine minutes when former Owls keeper Cameron Dawson found himself in ‘no man’s land’ from a corner, the ensuing Stoke header hit an upright and the ball bounced off Ernie Weaver and into the net.

Will Grainger missed a rare Wednesday opening when he dragged the ball wide from close range and that was as good as it got for the ‘second’ squad.

Keeper Jack Phillips came on for the final 35-minute slot and was beaten twice in quick succession by Milan Smit, the second after a miscued clearance by the young stopper, and it was 4-0 soon afterwards when Tomas Rigo’s curling free kick deflected off a two-man defensive wall and into the far corner of the net to complete the 4-0 scoreline.

Dawson (Phillips 36), Gray, Emery, McGhee, Weaver (Hatfield 60), Johnson, Mitchell (Sopala 36), Oliver, Moses, Grainger, McNeill.
