Diaby becomes sixth signing for Wednesday

Xisco Munoz has continued to bolster his Wednesday squad with the signing of Preston central defender Bambo Diaby this evening for an undisclosed fee.

Diaby, 25, began his career in Spain in 2016 but soon moved to Sampdoria in Italy. He returned to Spain in the following year, joining Girona FC, before signing for Lokeren in Belgium.

He moved to England in 2019 and played for Barnsley before a transfer to Preston in 2022.

Munoz, who talked about Diaby at today’s press conference ahead of Friday night’s S6 Championship opener against Southampton, told swfc.co.uk: “Bambo is a big, strong centre-back. He is very quick with the positions in defence.

“He has a very good mentality, he will always make sacrifices for the good of the group and he will bring a lot of balance to the squad.”

Diaby becomes Wednesday’s sixth pre-season signing and when asked about possible other new faces in the coming days, Munoz said at the press conference that Monaco forward Anthony Musaba and AC Milan keeper Devis Vasquez were two of several other players on a long list of possibilities.

Munoz added: “For me the best situation is when you have two players for every position. The Championship is a very hard competition and so you need players to push one another.”

Looking ahead to the Championship kick off, Munoz said: “I think it’s four weeks now since I arrived here and I’m very happy with the guys because they give me 100 per cent every day.

“We need to improve a lot of things but it’s a short time, players have arrived and we need to continue working.

“The Championship is a very high level with some very big teams and we look forward to the challenge we have. It’s very exciting for us.

“I can’t wait for the moment I walk out at Hillsborough and see the fans on Friday. It motivates me and the players.”
