Carlos praises team … and Wallace stunner

Carlos Carvalhal saluted Ross Wallace’s stunner of a winning goal at Fulham today and felt Wednesday were worthy victors.

He said: “I think we deserved the victory. The time we scored the goal was important because we were not playing well and Fulham had more of the ball.

“But football is like this and after the goal a lot of things changed in the game. Especially in the second half we had a lot of control of the game.

“In the second half we created three or four scoring chances to make another goal.”

Wallace’s superb 30-yarder into the top corner just before the half-hour mark proved to be the only goal of the game and, while praising such an outstanding goal, Carvalhal said: “When the strikers help with the defending it makes everything easier.

“The defenders have less to worry about and so does the goalkeeper, today Joe Wildsmith didn’t have any problems, and the whole defence showed what they can do, like Vincent Sasso who came into the team late.”

Wallace’s strike was also voted Goal of the Day by Sky Sports viewers and Carvalhal added: “Ross’ goal was fantastic.

“I was joking with him during the week about scoring this sort of goal, sometimes you get a feeling that these sort of things can happen.”

Wednesday might have increased the lead in the second half, with Gary Hooper twice denied by Andy Lonergan, while Fulham rarely tested Wildsmith after the keeper’s outstanding first-half stop from Emerson Hyndman.

Victory sees Wednesday in seventh place and back to within two points of the final play-off spot.
