Bannan’s cracker … Jamal’s joy … Owls back up to 12th

Wednesday moved into 12th spot and within five points of the Championship play-off places with a last-gasp winner at Derby this afternoon.

Victory looked a distant hope at half time with the Owls trailing 1-0 in a desperately disappointing first-half performance but another cracker from Barry Bannan on his birthday and then a 94th minute winner from Jamal Lowe turned the game on its head for our fourth success in five away league trips and a first triumph at Pride Park since 2006.

We looked sluggish from the start of the game and it was no surprise when the home side took the lead on nine minutes, Marcus Harness allowed to cross low from the left and Ebou Adams given the space to turn home from eight yards out.

Wednesday managed to force a few corners but there was no danger to the Derby goal in the opening half and it was very much a matter of being thankful the interval lead was just 1-0.

It was a similar story in the early stages of the second half and only the agility of James Beadle and then the woodwork stopped us from going further behind in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

First, Beadle performed heroics to deny Jerry Yates from 10 yards out and then the same Derby player was left unmarked in the six-yard box but saw his header come back off the bar on the hour.

However, the game took an unlikely twist four minutes later with another long-range gem from the left foot of birthday boy Bannan.

The ball fell to him 20 yards out after Derby only half-cleared a cross and the skipper promptly curled an exquisite shot over keeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom and Eiran Cashin into the top corner of the net.

Bannan ran the length of the pitch to celebrate with the 3,000-plus sellout Wednesday contingent and, as well as being an equaliser, it acted as the catalyst for a much-improved display from the Owls in  the final 25 minutes.

Jamal Lowe just couldn’t make a connection when Michael Smith headed across goal and when the ball was reworked into the Derby penalty area, Josh Windass shot wide of the far post.

Lowe headed over while Bannan went close with another long-ranger as Wednesday suddenly looked the more likely side to take all three points in the closing stages.

And then, with the game entering the 94th minute the outcome was decided in great style for Wednesday, Callum Paterson doing well to send in a low cross goal and there was Jamal Lowe turning home the winner from inside the six-yard box to spark great scenes of celebration in the Wednesday section.
