Bannan, Poveda injury news … Rohl on Ipswich defeat

Wednesday suffered a double injury worry in the midst of this afternoon’s six-goal drubbing at Ipswich.

Barry Bannan was subbed at half time while Ian Poveda limped off early in the second half, leaving Danny Rohl to say afterwards: “This is maybe the bigger defeat. It could be that both players are out for a couple of weeks, but let’s see.

“They could be a risk for the Swansea game after the international break but the good thing is that we have one week where we can recover and then a second week before the game.”

Rohl said Poveda is likely to have to withdraw from the Colombia squad as a result of his muscle injury and appeared more hopeful over Bannan’s condition.

Reflecting on the Ipswich defeat and his decision to start the match with a back four rather than the back five used in recent games, Rohl said: “You can come here and park the bus but it is more my identity to come here and try something and be part of the game.”

He added: “We came here with an idea of what we could do against them but, all in all, when you concede six goals I have to take the responsibility as coach. It was my idea and maybe not good enough.”

Looking at the challenge of the final eight games after the international break to try to achieve Championship survival, the manager said: “For me, it’s about refreshing the mind and going forward. We have eight finals and this is our job.

“When I look at the table, the race is still close. We have a big opportunity to achieve our goals, we have taken a lot of points in the last few weeks but we have two defeats against strong sides.

“Of course, it’s hard to take but we have to come back from this setback like we have before and if we can do this again then we have a chance.”
