Wilks raring to get started … but cup-tied for tomorrow

Mallik Wilks says he is eager to get started in a Wednesday shirt after becoming Darren Moore’s 10th summer signing.

The 23-year-old striker, who can play in a central role or on the wing, has joined us from Hull for an undisclosed fee and Wilks told swfc.co.uk today: “I’m a Yorkshire boy, so it was ideal for me. It’s a massive club and I really wanted to work with the gaffer.

”I’m buzzing and can’t wait to get started.”

Wilks, who said he was relieved to get the move completed after Wednesday had shown interest in him since the start of pre-season,  will wear shirt number 7 but is cup-tied for tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup second round tie against Rochdale at Hillsborough.

He started his career as a youth player with hometown club Leeds and had loan spells at Accrington, Grimsby and Doncaster before a permanent move to Barnsley in July 2019.

However, he was off on loan to Hull six months later and then signed for them in July 2020, scoring 23 goals in 71 appearances.
