Stuart Gray says he hopes that Connor Wickham will still return to Hillsborough on loan after the young striker was called back to Sunderland on Monday morning.
Gray, who had told a press conference only an hour earlier that he was hopeful of keeping Wickham on loan, said: “It was a bolt out of the blue that he went back. Apparently, they had to call him back by midday on Monday for him to be eligible to play on Wednesday evening.”
He said that there was still a possibility Wickham could resume his loan at S6 and added: “Connor was hugely disappointed that he had to go back.”
Gray added: “However, we are not a one-man team … we are a team.”
And he said he was still talking with clubs about bringing in more players before Friday evening’s transfer window closes.
