Wednesday share points with fellow strugglers

Wednesday took their first point of the season at Hillsborough in a 1-1 draw with bottom club Middlesbrough this evening.

After a poor game it leaves us level on points with Boro, ahead of them on goal difference but still searching for a first Championship victory in seven matches played.

Both sides lacked confidence and fluidity in their play with the Owls the better side in the first half but Boro turning the tables in the second 45 and looking the more likely to run out winners.

Wednesday, with the returning Barry Bannan stamping his authority on the midfield in the early stages, went close after nine minutes with Pol Valentin firing wide from the edge of the box and Ashley Fletcher unable to deflect the ball into the net.

Boro gradually came into the game after a sloppy start and Akin Famewo had to block a close-range effort from Sam Silvera after the visitors opened up the Owls defence with a decent passing movement.

However, it was Wednesday who took the lead on 38 minutes. Valentin, starting his first league game for the Owls, was causing problems down the right, he found the overlapping Di’Shon Bernard and the latter’s low cross picked out the unmarked Anthony Musaba to slot home from eight yards.

It might have been 2-0 in added time, Fletcher failing to connect with a Valentin cross at the near post.

However, Boro came out with more energy and purpose after the break and were level on 53 minutes, Darragh Lenihan hooking home a corner from close range and via the underside of the bar.

Five minutes later Matt Crooks thought he had headed the visitors in front but was ruled offside and Josh Coburn went close soon afterwards after dispossessing Bambo Diaby.

With Middlesbrough bossing much of the second half, it took Wednesday until the closing minutes to create another chance, George Byers curling his effort wide from just inside the box when he should have hit the target.
