Wednesday went down to a 1-0 defeat in the Steel City derby at Bramall Lane this afternoon.
Honours were even after a largely uneventful first half, with neither keeper tested, but Sheff U started the second 45 in a more aggressive manner and grabbed the all-important goal just five minutes after the restart.
It turned out to be the game’s solitary shot on target and came when we only half-cleared a poor free kick, Gus Hamer and Callum O’Hare then combined and when the latter fed Tyrese Campbell in the box he shot past the advancing James Beadle.
Danny Rohl brought on four attacking subs during the last half hour to try to level matters but our only real threat came on 75 minutes when Michael Smith’s clever backheel sent Anthony Musaba bursting down the right, he cut into the box but saw his shot blocked by Femi Seriki.
Then, from the resulting corner, the ball almost found Dominic Iorfa six yards out but defender Harry Souttar came to the rescue.
And, despite the attacking changes we still failed to mount any concerted pressure, or an effort on target, and it was Sheff U who took the points on the day.
The defeat leaves us in 15th place with 18 points from 15 games as we go into the latest international break.
