Wednesday beaten by second-half strike

A second-half goal from Ayoze Perez was enough to send Wednesday to a 1-0 pre-season defeat to Newcastle at Hillsborough this evening.

We had the better of the first-half and twice went close, first through Gary Madine and then Sam Hutchinson firing against the crossbar.

However, Wednesday were made to pay for failing to turn their possession into goals when an understrength Newcastle side grabbed the only goal on 65 minutes, Perez beating the offside trap to run through and score.

Franck Betra missed a great chance to level matters when he shot wide from close range, Ryan Croasdale tested keeper Rob Elliot and Michail Antonio twice threatened late on … but all to no avail.

Wednesday also included French trialist Roy Contout, who came on during the second half for Chris Maguire.

Owls: Kirkland, Palmer (Young), Loovens, Kelhar (Zayatte), Mattock (Floro), Maguire (Contout), Hutchinson (McCabe), Coke (Croasdale), Maghoma (Antonio), Madine, Nuhiu (Betra). Unused subs: Wildsmith, Dawson. Attendance: 10,173
