‘We need to go from the start … not the second half’

Xisco Munoz was pleased to see Wednesday chalk up a first win under his managership with penalty shootout success against Stockport last night … but was also unhappy to concede another early goal.

Speaking after we progressed to round two of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 97th minute Tyreeq Bakinson equaliser and then winning 4-1 on spot kicks via two penalty saves from debutant keeper Devis Vasquez, Munoz said: “Today we had six new players in our team and it’s the first time they’ve played together. The most important thing is we’re in the next round.”

However, after trailing to an early goal – just like we were  against Southampton four days earlier – Munoz said: “One of the things we need to improve on is our first minutes. I’m not happy about this situation.

“We conceded the other day in the first minutes and today again. You can never stay in this situation. One of the most important things about my teams is to go from the start, not wait until the second half.”

Munoz said Michael Smith was due to be in the squad but was a late absentee because of sickness while Mallik Wilks missed out through a slight injury. Marvin Johnson again failed to make the 20-man squad.
