Unconvincing Owls regain play-off place

Wednesday moved back into the play-off positions with an uninspiring 1-0 win at struggling Wigan on Friday night.

Victory takes us onto 49 points and into sixth place, three points ahead of Derby who have the opportunity to go back above us on goal difference on Saturday if they win at Newcastle.

Ross Wallace netted the only goal of the game on 43 minutes, his close-range effort from debutant Jordan Rhodes’ headed flick-on deflecting off Wigan defender Jake Buxton.

The goal came after Wednesday’s best spell of the game but ended up being our only effort on target.

Instead of building on the lead, we allowed the home side to dominate the second half and better opposition would have punished us for a far from convincing performance.

However, it is three important points in the play-off shake-up, keeping us in touch with those immediately above us and ahead of the chasing pack behind.
