Wednesday are top of division one after chalking up a third successive league win and have still to concede a goal this season following the 2-0 victory at South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham this afternoon.
We move on to 10 points after four games, leading the division on goal difference ahead of Wycombe and Portsmouth, and it was two second-half goals – coupled with a tremendous penalty save from Bailey Peacock-Farrell at the end of the opening 45 minutes – that ensured the success in a typically hard-fought and competitive derby.
After a delayed start due to problems with some of the turnstiles, Wednesday had an early chance when Florian Kamberi shot over the bar after being set up by Callum Paterson … but that was our only real threat of the first half.
At the other end, the home side put us under considerable pressure in the opening half hour with a series of long throws and corners testing the Wednesday defence.
Then came the key moment of the first period in added time when Paterson was adjudged to have brought down Josh Kayode in the box.
Kieran Sadlier fired his fierce spot kick towards the left-hand corner of the net but Bailey Peacock-Farrell flung himself to his right to pull off a fine stop.
And Wednesday made the home side pay for the penalty miss within minutes of the start of the second half.
Paterson did well on the right-hand side before crossing perfectly for Kamberi, who had the simple task of knocking the ball home from six yards for his first competitive goal for the club and in front of the travelling fans.
Rotherham rallied, with Peacock-Farrell saving from Michael Smith and ex-Owl Richard Wood knocking the rebound wide.
Sub Lee Gregory then missed a great chance to make it two on 66 minutes when Barry Bannan found him on the break but Gregory’s heavy first touch allowed onrushing keeper Viktor Johannson to block his effort.
However, the same player did double our lead 10 minutes later, Johannson fumbling Dennis Ademiran’s scuffed long-ranger and Gregory seizing on the loose ball to tuck it home for 2-0 and secure the three points.
