Striker ‘close to signing new S6 contract’

Garry Monk is hoping Wednesday can agree terms on a new contract with Steven Fletcher in the near future.

Fletcher, now back to near full fitness after being sidelined with a knee injury since the start of January, has been in outstanding form this season and Monk believes a deal can soon be sealed to keep the striker at Hillsborough.

The manager said today: “Steven wants to be here and we want him to be here. Barring the injury, he is having a fantastic season.

“Of course, what you need is good senior pros. He has recognised over the last year or so how to look after himself and give himself the best opportunity of that longevity.

“Hopefully we can get a good outcome. Both parties want it to happen and hopefully we can have news on that as soon as we can.”

Monk also revealed that, as one of the club’s senior professionals, Fletcher had spoken with the squad and with individuals during our recent poor run of results.

He said: “What you need is for your senior players to be the voice from within, as well as young players.  However, the senior ones are the most experienced and you need that leadership.

“Senior players are massively important, players like Barry Bannan and Fletch, the experience they have, the standing they have in the changing room and it is important they use that influence in the right way and they have done that.

“That’s what you want, leadership from within, it can’t just come from myself or my staff.”
