Newly-appointed Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, has spoken of his plans to ‘help shape the next chapter in Wednesday’s journey’.

Wilson, who has top-level experience across recruitment, performance, strategy and football operations will be at the heart of a new structure at S6, leading the club’s sporting strategy and helping build the foundations for sustainable success.

Talking of his appointment this afternoon, he said: “Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football, with a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out.

“The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them.

“That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club – particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.

“Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term.

“I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”

Chief Executive Officer, David Bruce, said: “Simon’s appointment is an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday. We are building for the future, and that requires experienced, high-calibre leadership at every level of the football club.

“Simon brings a rare blend of strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership, having worked at some of the most respected organisations in world football.

”His appointment reflects our commitment to modernising the club, strengthening our football structure and building in a way that gives Wednesday the strongest possible platform for long-term success.

“We also recognise and respect the immense effort of everyone involved throughout an incredibly challenging 2025-26 season. The work ahead is not about disregarding what came before, but building on those foundations with greater ambition, clarity and alignment.”

Wilson started his career at Southampton before spending seven years at Manchester City, in several senior strategic and performance roles.

He later joined Sunderland AFC as Chief Football Officer before undertaking consultancy work for the Premier League, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax.

In more recent times, he played a major role at Stockport County, initially as Director of Football and later as Chief Executive Officer, helping lead the club from the National League to last month’s League One play-off final where they lost to Bolton.
