Pierce Charles’ dream of playing in this summer’s World Cup finals ended when Northern Ireland lost their play-off semi final 2-0 to Italy in Bergamo tonight.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Italy began the second half in more threatening manner and Charles saved well from Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean before the home side took the lead on 55 minutes, Sandro Tonali driving home from the edge of the box.

The dangerous Kean was then just wide with a spectacular overhead kick before sealing the win for Italy 10 minutes from time when he shot past Charles and in off the far post.
