Owls await result of red card appeal

Wednesday are appealing against Keiren Westwood’s dismissal at Derby on Saturday.

Stuart Gray said today that the club is challenging the straight red card shown to Westwood when he was adjudged to have brought down Tom Ince during the second half, the incident also leading to a penalty and Derby’s winning goal.

Gray said he felt the referee whistled too early in awarding the penalty, the ball then going to Darren Bent who netted.

He added: “We feel if the ref had played on for a fraction, Bent puts the ball into the net and he might have awarded just a yellow card to Keiren Westwood. We believe it is double punishment with both the penalty and the sending off.”

Wednesday will receive the result of the appeal tomorrow and, if successful, then Westwood can be expected to be in goal for tomorrow night’s trip to Millwall. Otherwise, Chris Kirkland will deputise and Gray added: “If I have to call on Chris, that is no issue. He plans and prepares for every fixture and is a quality goalkeeper.”
