The Owls pair of keeper Logan Stretch and striker Will Grainger were the heroes for the Welsh under-19s in their 5-4 penalty shootout victory over the United States at Wrexham on Saturday.
In the second of their three-game Euros 2026 ‘friendly preparatory tournament’, the teams were locked at 1-1 after normal time, sending the match to the lottery of spot kicks.
The United States, who began the shootout, converted their first four penalties while the Wales youngsters scored their first two efforts but missed their third kick.
That left the US 4-2 ahead. Wales had to score their fourth kick to keep the game alive and did so but with the United States then knowing that a fifth successful penalty would earn them victory.
However, Stretch had other ideas as he pulled off a save and, with Wales converting their fifth penalty, it was all-square with the shootout going to sudden death.
Stretch then lived up to his surname, going full length to foil the next US spot kick, and up stepped his Wednesday team-mate, 16-year-old Grainger, who calmly slotted home to seal a memorable ‘made in Hillsborough’ 5-4 shootout success for the pair and for Wales.
For Grainger, it was another vital contribution as well, after he scored and had an assist in the Welsh team’s midweek 3-2 win over Japan.
The Wales youngsters now take on Germany in their third and final tournament match at Denbigh on November 18, kick off 11am.
Meanwhile, Owls loanee Harry Amass came on for the last 22 minutes as England under-19s chalked up an emphatic 7-0 win over Latvia in their Euros 2026 qualifier in Lithuania today.
Amass replaced Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni after 68 minutes with the Young Lions already 6-0 ahead and they added a further effort soon afterwards to complete the scoring.
They now round off their trio of first qualifying round matches in Lithuania when they take on Scotland on Tuesday, kick off 10am.
