Wednesday were distinctly second best to promotion-chasing Fulham in a 1-0 defeat at Hillsborough.
Joe Wildsmith pulled off three excellent saves and Fulham had 22 shots – eight of them on target – with dangerman Aleksandar Mitrovic finally breaking the deadlock when he was left unmarked to fire home the only goal from close range on 78 minutes.
We fared better in the first half, without causing the visitors many scares, but once the influential Barry Bannan limped off just on the half-hour mark, Fulham took an even greater stranglehold on the game and were in total charge after the interval.
We failed to get a shot on target but might have grabbed a shock equaliser in added time when sub Fernando Forestieri fired just wide.
Jos Luhukay said: “In the first half we have good moments and got into offensive situations – but the final pass was not always good.
“In the second half, we lost control of the game and we needed very strong defending to stop the quality of Fulham.”
This defeat, after three successive victories, leaves us in 16th place and 10 points clear of Barnsley, who fill the third relegation spot and have a game in hand on us.
