Wednesday turned in a battling performance that might have brought them a point on another day before going down 1-0 at Millwall tonight.

It was a much-improved display after Sunday’s 3-0 derby defeat against a Millwall team who moved up to fourth place after the victory.

The Lions went close midway through the first half, Ethan Horvath saving from Thierno Ballo and Sean Fusire then blocking the same player’s follow-up.

However, Wednesday hit back on 28 minutes when a 20-yarder from Bailey Cadamarteri deflected off Cooper and was pushed away by Max Crocombe.

Then, two minutes before half time we went even closer with a near ‘worldie’ from Barry Bannan.

There looked nothing on when the Owls skipper picked the ball up just inside the Millwall half and fired a tremendous effort with the outside of his foot which was only just clawed away from the top corner of the net by the back pedalling Crocombe.

Millwall’s Mihailo Ivanovic had a goal disallowed for offside soon after the break but Wednesday continued to keep themselves well in the game.

Charlie McNeill saw his effort from inside the box crash back off the crossbar and when Cadamarteri sent a header goalwards from the same attack Wednesday were left appealing in vain for a possible penalty for handball as the ball came back off a Millwall defender.

Just after the hour, the home side began to dominate with Luke Cundle shooting over from six yards out before Svante Ingelsson came to the rescue when he cleared off the line from Taylor.

However, it was a short-lived reprieve with Millwall taking the lead on 70 minutes when substitute Femi Azeez, who posed us problems when he came on after an hour, headed home from a looping cross.

Five minutes later, Jamal Lowe went close to an equaliser when his shot from the edge of the box hit the joint of post and bar with Crocombe beaten.

And, three minutes from time, we might have had a penalty when McNeill went down in the box under a challenge but the referee waved away Wednesday appeals for a spot kick to leave us winless in our last 11 games at the foot of the table.
