Wednesday were totally outplayed in a 3-0 defeat at Hillsborough today as Watford went to the top of the Championship.
The visitors were superior in all departments while the Owls huffed and puffed and failed to show the necessary energy, desire and ability to counter Watford’s slick passing game.
Sam Hutchinson lasted just seven minutes in his return from injury before limping off with a suspected twisted knee and worse followed when Watford took the lead on 21 minutes through Odion Zighola, with Wednesday claiming what looked a clear offside in the build-up to the goal.
Keiren Westwood suffered a gashed leg and needed lengthy treatment after being caught by a Watford striker and was possibly still shaken when he allowed a weak effort from Almen Abdi to slip through his hands to put the Hornets two-up before the break.
Wednesday upped their game a little at the start of the second-half and both Jacques Maghoma and sub Royston Drenthe tested Herelho Gomes in the Watford goal from long range.
However, they were rare moments of threat from the Owls and it was no surprise when Matej Vydra finished well to seal the points for the visitors on 69 minutes.
