Wednesday broke our goal drought but then conceded twice in quick succession to go down 2-1 at home to Millwall this afternoon.

Jamal Lowe sent the Hillsborough crowd into raptures on the hour-mark when he scored our first goal since Boxing Day, turning the ball home from close range after Millwall keeper Max Crocombe had spilled a Charlie McNeill shot from the edge of the box to put us one-up.

That followed a good start to the second half from the Owls with Olaf Kobacki doing well to break clear on 47 minutes but he shot into the side netting when a curler into the far corner looked a better option.

Then Cole McGhee tested Crocombe from the edge of the box soon afterwards before Lowe struck that long-awaited goal.

Barry Bannan left the field soon afterwards on his Hillsborough return before Millwall turned the scoreline around with two goals in two minutes.

Sloppy defending inside the penalty area on 72 minutes allowed Millwall time and space to send in a low cross from their left and McGhee turned the ball into his own net.

Worse followed two minutes later when Femi Azeez was allowed to centre from the other flank and Macaulay Longstaff lost his defender to stab the ball home from six yards.

The Lions were back in the ascendancy at this stage and almost made it 3-1 when Mihailo Ivanovic’s hooked effort from close-in twice hit the underside of the bar.

The nearest we came to an equaliser saw McNeill send an effort across goal and past the far post and, despite a better performance than of late, it was another defeat for Wednesday.

Millwall had the better of the first half with defender Caleb Taylor missing their best chance, heading into the ground when unmarked in the box.

Murphy Cooper also saved from Tristan Camra’s shapshot and then received treatment after diving at the feet of Josh Coburn.

At the other end, our only effort in the first 45 minutes saw Lowe shoot well wide from 15 yards after good work by McNeill.

Then came that breakthrough goal from Lowe but hopes of a first win in 27 games, or at least a point, were soon ended by Millwall’s quick double strike.
